The Energy Transition in Bulgaria: Energy Storage is the Next Big Step After Photovoltaics

The Bulgarian energy sector is entering a new stage, where the focus is shifting from the production of renewable energy itself to its efficient storage. According to experts, the combination of photovoltaic systems and batteries is the logical continuation of development in the sector.

Kiril Beleliev, a member of the board of directors of "AmonRa Energy" AD, noted in an interview with Bloomberg TV Bulgaria that the large price spread between daytime and nighttime tariffs creates powerful incentives for the implementation of battery systems. These technologies allow consumers to charge energy at low prices (when production is high) and use or sell it when prices are higher.

"Electricity storage batteries are becoming the next big direction after the development of photovoltaic systems," Beleliev emphasized. He added that investing in storage capacity turns current market imbalances into real economic benefits for businesses and households.

In addition to financial optimization, battery systems also offer a critical energy security function. They serve as protection against power outages, ensuring the continuity of work processes – a factor that is crucial for manufacturing enterprises.

The expert also noted that there is still enormous unused potential for rooftop photovoltaic systems in Bulgaria. Particularly large development capacity is seen in sectors such as municipal buildings, hospitals, schools, and enterprises, where the direct consumption of produced energy can lead to an immediate return on investment.
