Opel enters Algeria with a new plant: Production of cars and engines planned

German automaker Opel is taking a significant step toward expanding its industrial presence in Africa. Following the official signing of a memorandum in Berlin with the Algerian state-owned company AGM Holding, the brand confirmed its plans to build a new factory in the country.

The project is of strategic importance, as it is part of the official industrial cooperation between Germany and Algeria. In addition to assembling finished vehicles, the agreement provides for the creation of Algeria's first production line for light vehicle engines, which is a key element for the technological development of the region.

Although Opel has not yet revealed the specific location, the exact volume of investment, or the list of models to be produced, experts believe that the localization of production will bring several important benefits:

• Reducing the brand's dependence on the import of finished vehicles.
• More stable supply chains for end customers.
• Optimization of logistics costs.
• Stimulating local Algerian suppliers.

This decision is a logical continuation of Opel's return to the Algerian market in November 2023, after a six-year hiatus. Currently, the brand offers models such as the Mokka, Astra, and Grandland, but it is unknown which of them will become part of the local production program.

Interestingly, Opel is not the only player in the region. The parent company Stellantis already has a manufacturing base in Algeria through the Fiat plant in Tafraoui, which plans a significant capacity increase by 2028. Opel's project fits into this broader strategy to strengthen Stellantis' presence in North Africa.
