Greece to reduce fuel prices following agreement with refineries
Greece is preparing a significant reduction in fuel prices, which will come into effect starting next week. The decision is the result of an agreement between the Greek government and the leading oil refineries in the country.
According to information provided by Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Hatzidakis and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the two largest refinery complexes have agreed to adjust prices downward until the end of August. The specific changes involve a decrease of 10 cents per liter for gasoline and 5 cents for diesel fuel.
The government emphasizes that the measure is necessary because, during the summer months, fuel expenses for Greek citizens and tourists rise sharply due to intensive travel. Tour operators are already noting that high gasoline prices have forced some tourists to replace distant islands with closer destinations to save on costs.
Despite the positive news, the opposition in Greece criticizes the decision, calling it temporary and insisting on more permanent changes by removing part of the tax burden on fuels. Meanwhile, the government is expected to consider new fuel subsidy mechanisms starting in September.
