Cultural Clash in Venice: Biennale to Challenge EU Decision to Cut €2 Million Due to Russia

The Venice Biennale, one of the world's most prestigious cultural events, has found itself at the center of a sharp political conflict with the European Union. The cultural institution announced that it will challenge Brussels' decision to withdraw a grant of 2 million euros after it was announced that Russia will participate again with a national pavilion in the 2026 edition.

The conflict escalated following the European Commission's decision to terminate funding, arguing the necessity for cultural projects supported by European taxpayers to defend democratic values. According to Commission spokesperson Thomas Rényi, today's Russia does not demonstrate respect for freedom of speech and diversity – the core pillars of the EU.

On the part of the Biennale, the decision was perceived as expected, but also as unfair. Organizers emphasize that the funds subject to the sanction are intended for cinema department projects and have no connection to the participation of the Russian pavilion. According to the institution's leadership, the loss of the grant will not jeopardize the financial stability or current activities of the festival.

Biennale President Pietrangelo Buttafuoco defended his position, stating that the festival must be a space for the coexistence of the entire world, without censorship. During the last edition of the event, the Russian presence was heavily restricted – access to the pavilion was permitted only for short press conferences, and the audience could only observe video projections on the external walls of the building.
