Bulgaria develops new scientific center for post-quantum cryptography and cybersecurity

The Institute for Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Technology (INSAIT) at Sofia University has announced the creation of a new scientific direction dedicated to information security. The research focus will be on classical and, even more critically, post-quantum cryptography.

The development of this field is becoming a strategic priority with the advent of quantum technologies, which have the potential to compromise existing digital protection methods. The new initiative aims to build national capacity for developing technologies resistant to the future capabilities of quantum computers, which is crucial for the security of financial systems, cloud services, and e-government.

The new scientific unit will be led by Dr. Michael Reichle, who joins INSAIT from ETH Zurich – one of the most prestigious technological universities in the world. Dr. Reichle has significant experience in the field, having previously been associated with prestigious institutions such as École Normale Supérieure and Inria Paris in France. His scientific papers have been published in leading global journals such as the Journal of Cryptology, and he also works on practical applications in the industry, including with the company PQShield.

The addition of a specialist with such an international profile is an important step in positioning Bulgaria as a center for fundamental research in one of the most dynamic and competitive spheres of global science.
