Breakthrough in EU Negotiations: Ukraine Opens New Key Negotiation Cluster
Ukraine's accession process to the European Union has taken a significant step forward. The European affairs ministers of the member states have officially given the green light to open Cluster 6 of the negotiation process, European sources report.
Cluster 6 focuses on foreign relations and is considered one of the most important pillars within the membership negotiations. So far, only Cluster 1, which covers fundamental principles, the rule of law, and democratic institutions, has been opened for Kyiv.
"Today we achieved another important milestone on Ukraine's path to EU membership," said Irish Minister of State Thomas Byrne, representing Ireland's presidency in the EU Council. According to him, the decision is proof of Ukraine's determination to accelerate its integration.
This progress also marks the end of the long political blockade that previous governments in Hungary, under the leadership of Viktor Orbán, used to halt the process. With the change in the political landscape in Hungary and the start of a dialogue regarding minority rights in Western Ukraine, negotiations have gained momentum.
Parallel to Ukraine, similar progress is expected for Moldova, whose paths to the EU are closely linked to the Kyiv process. The European Commission emphasizes that although both countries are technically ready to open all clusters, real steps depend on the consensus of the 27 member states.
Against the backdrop of Russian aggression since 2022, the aspiration of Ukraine and Moldova for EU membership is viewed not only as a political act but also as a search for deep security and defense guarantees across the entire continent.
