Spain's Economic Model Triggers Political Tension in the European Union

Economic Growth and Demographic Factors

Spain is demonstrating significant economic outperformance compared to the Eurozone averages. Forecasts predict growth of 2.6% in 2026, with the rate expected to remain above 2% in the coming years. The country's success is also attributed to the doubling of wind and solar energy capacity since 2019, which has helped manage energy prices.

A key factor for economic stability is the government's immigration management policy. The influx of labor is filling gaps in the agriculture, care, and low-skilled labor sectors, contributing to limiting employer costs and addressing demographic aging. Since 2000, the country's population has increased by over 20%, while the same indicator in Germany is below 2%. According to data, the demographic factor has contributed between 25% and 40% to Spain's growth since 2022.

Political Rifts in the EU

Despite the economic results, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's policies are causing tension among centrists and moderate leftists in Europe. One of the main points of divergence is the stance on migration. Madrid has implemented policies to regularize nearly 1 million illegal migrants, which is a politically sensitive issue for leaders in other European countries striving to satisfy their electorates.

Another controversial issue is defense and fiscal policy. While many NATO allies are aiming for defense spending of 5% of GDP, Spain maintains a level of 2.1%. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has urged an increase in Spanish spending to 3.5%.

The Debate on Joint Debt

Spain actively supports the idea of more joint borrowing at the EU level, which would provide cheaper financing for Southern European countries. Sánchez's deputy, Carlos Cuerpo, proposes the creation of a "European Sovereign Instrument" to centralize the debt burden. However, this initiative faces strong resistance from northern countries, including France, due to concerns regarding moral hazard and the need for strict control over public spending.
