Science vs. Mysticism: Former NASA Scientist Reveals What One Sees on the "Other Side"

Can consciousness survive after the heart stops beating? This question fascinates Ingrid Honkala – a former scientist working for NASA and the US Navy, who claims to have "passed through the portal" of death three times.

In her book "Dying To See The Light," 55-year-old Honkala describes experiences that raise serious questions about the nature of reality. According to her, the moments of clinical death were not an endpoint, but a transition to a deeper layer of existence that is inaccessible to our senses.

The First Encounter: Communication Beyond the Body's Boundaries
Her first experience occurred when she was barely two years old. Following a fall into a reservoir of icy water, Honkala describes a state where panic was replaced by an "overwhelming sense of peace." She claims to have entered a state of out-of-body perception, during which she saw her own lifeless body in the water. Most incredible to her, she claims, was that she managed to "transmit" a signal to her mother through pure consciousness, which prompted the woman to return in time and save her.

Three Times on the Edge of the Abyss
Honkala's experiences did not stop there. She underwent similar states again at age 25 after a motorcycle accident, and at age 52 during a medical operation. In all three cases, she shares the same insight: she was not merely a physical being, but a "field of awareness and light," united with the entire universe.

Science or Hallucination?
While skeptics and scientists often explain these visions as side effects of oxygen deprivation or psycho-spiritual coping mechanisms for stress, Honkala defends her position. She claims that these experiences are precisely what drove her toward science—to understand the nature of reality.

"Science and spirituality are not necessarily in conflict – they are simply exploring the same mystery from different perspectives," she says. For the former scientist, death is not an end, but a transition into the continuity of consciousness, which perhaps is not produced by the brain, but is a fundamental part of reality itself.
