Ski mountaineering, also known as "skimo," made its triumphant debut at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games. A historic moment was celebrated in Bormio as Spaniard Oriol Cardona Coll became the first Olympic champion in history in this discipline.
Coll dominated the men's sprint, maintaining a lead throughout the entire race. He finished with an impressive lead of 1.52 seconds ahead of the runner-up Nikita Filippov (competing under a neutral flag). Third place in the historic race went to Frenchman Thibaut Anselme, who finished 2.31 seconds behind the leader.

The debut of ski mountaineering is a large-scale event, reminiscent of the first inclusion of skeleton in the Olympic program at the Salt Lake City Games in 2002. The discipline requires exceptional endurance and strength, as the course includes not only descent but also climbing, where athletes must remove their skis to overcome obstacles such as stairs before descending towards the finish line.
