End of the Disc Era: Sony to Stop Producing Physical Copies for PlayStation After 2028

Sony has made a decision that marks the end of an era in the gaming industry. The company announced that it will cease the production of physical discs for all new PlayStation titles released after January 2028. This marks the giant's final transition to a digital distribution model.

The decision is economically motivated. The shift to digital sales allows Sony to optimize its production, logistics, and physical distribution costs, which directly increases profit margins. Data from 2025 shows that revenue from digital downloads already exceeds that of physical media by almost tenfold.

Despite the economic logic, industry analysts are expressing criticism. The main issue is for consumers, who will lose their rights over acquired assets. While a physical disc allows a gamer to resell, trade, or gift a game, a digital code is a "closed" asset that cannot be transferred.

This decision is an ironic twist in the company's history. In 2013, during the unveiling of the PlayStation 4, Sony was the primary defender of consumers' rights to own and dispose of their physical copies, opposing the restrictions of Xbox. Today, Sony is removing these possibilities itself.

Experts warn that this could lead to the gradual disappearance of the massive secondary game market, which is projected to reach a value of $13.8 billion by 2034. For end users, this means higher costs and a lack of flexibility in managing their collections.
