Breast milk is a dynamic biological fluid whose composition changes depending on the stage of lactation and the specific needs of the child. During the first days after birth, colostrum is secreted – a milk concentrated in proteins, immunoglobulins, and other protective factors, but with a lower fat and lactose content. As lactation develops, mature milk is formed, providing higher energy through fats and carbohydrates.

Approximately 60–70% of the energy in breast milk is provided by fats, which are crucial for the development of the central nervous system and the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. Lactose, the primary carbohydrate, supports calcium absorption and brain development, while the ratio between whey proteins and casein is optimized for easy absorption by the immature gastrointestinal tract.

A characteristic feature is the adaptability of breast milk: in mothers of premature infants, the composition changes, containing higher amounts of fats and nucleotides to support the development of the immature organism. Even within a single breastfeeding session, the composition changes: at the beginning, the milk is richer in water and lactose, and towards the end of the session, the fat content increases, providing a longer sense of satiety.

Another key advantage is the high bioavailability of minerals. Iron is absorbed significantly more efficiently compared to cow's milk, and the favorable ratio between calcium and phosphorus supports bone mineralization and reduces the risk of nutritional deficiencies.

Immunity and Disease Prevention

Breastfeeding provides passive immune protection through a rich composition of immunological components, including antibodies, immune cells, enzymes, secretory IgA, lactoferrin, lysozyme, oligosaccharides, cytokines, and live immune cells. These support the maturation of the immune system and the building of a protective barrier in the intestinal mucosa.

According to scientific data, breastfed babies have a lower risk of developing:
